Biological Diversity (biodiversity) referes to the variety, number and genetic variation of all living organism whether on land, or sea or in any other aquatic system. Each species makes a contribution to its ecosystem which inturn supports the environment and human health.
Antigua and Barbuda, like the other Caribbean Islands has a combination of extremely rare and endangered species and also overpopulation or intense packing of species per unit area.
Because of this and existing biodiversity threats, there is a call for the region to be considered one of the highest priority biodiversity hotspots in the world. Loss of biodiversity not only threatens the environment but also local knowledge for generations to come.
